Kagoshima Shrine

Japanese: 鹿児島神宮 - かごしまじんぐう
Kagoshima Shrine

It is located in Hayato-cho, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The main deities are Amatsuhidakahikohohodemi-no-mikoto and Toyotamahime-no-mikoto, and the other deities enshrined are Tarashihiko-no-mikoto (Emperor Chuai), Okinagatarashihime-no-mikoto (Empress Jingu), Hondawake-no-mikoto (Emperor Ojin), and Nakahime-no-mikoto (Empress Ojin). According to the shrine's legend, the shrine was founded in either the Age of the Gods or the reign of Emperor Jimmu. Since the Middle Ages, it has also been called Osumi Sho Hachiman or Kokubu Hachiman. It was designated as a Taisha shrine under the Engi system, and was highly revered by the common people as the Ichinomiya of Osumi Province (eastern Kagoshima Prefecture). The cost of maintenance was covered by the tax revenues of the three provinces of Hyuga (Miyazaki Prefecture), Satsuma (western Kagoshima Prefecture), and Osumi. During the Kenkyu era (1190-1199) of Emperor Gotoba, the shrine had a land area of over 2,500 cho, and by the end of the Edo period, it had a land area of 1,000 koku. The current shrine building was built with the tax revenues of the Satsuma Domain over two generations, the 24th and 25th generations of the Shimazu clan. In 1871 (Meiji 4), it was designated as a National Medium-sized Shrine, and in 1874, Kagoshima Shrine was renamed Kagoshima Jingu, became a Kanpei Medium-sized Shrine, and in 1895, became a Kanpei Taisha. The shrine grounds and the remains of the shrine are designated as national historic sites. The annual festival is held on August 15th in the lunar calendar. At the Hatsuuma Festival, held on the Sunday closest to the 18th of the lunar New Year, many Suzukake horses dance in prayer, led by a sacred horse.
