Steel used for rolling bearings, containing about 1% carbon and 0.9-1.6% chromium. There are plain bearings and rolling bearings for supporting rotating shafts, the latter of which are subjected to extremely heavy loads at the contact points where balls or rollers contact the race at points or lines. To withstand this, bearing steel is used in which extremely hard chromium-iron carbide particles are finely dispersed in an extremely hard base material (martensite) obtained by quenching.

ころがり軸受に用いる鋼で、約1％の炭素と0.9～1.6％のクロムを含有する。回転軸を支える軸受にはすべり軸受ところがり軸受とがあるが、後者はボールまたはころとレースの点または線接触の状態で非常に大きな荷重が接触部にかかる。これに耐えるため、きわめて硬いクロム・鉄炭化物粒子を、焼入れによって得られる非常に硬い素地（マルテンサイト）中に微細に分散させた軸受鋼が用いられる。
