Azuma Diary - Azuma no Niki

Japanese: 東日記 - あずまのにき

A collection of haiku poems. Compiled by Ikenishi Gonsui. Published in 1681 (Enpo 9). 2 volumes in total. Contains hokku poems about the four seasons and 9 volumes of kasen poems. The main authors are Gonsui, Kikaku, Saimaro, Tosei (Basho), Yusei, Rosen, Yuzan, and others. In his preface, Saimaro declares that "I have published a collection of ku poems three times since then, three times changing the style and three times becoming old," so he has once again pursued a new style. The works are a mixture of good and bad, but they fully convey the haiku style of the transitional period from Danrin to the Shoshu style. [Inui Hiroyuki]

俳諧撰集。池西言水（ごんすい）編。1681年(延宝9)刊。全2巻。四季の発句と歌仙9巻を収める。主な作者は言水，其角（きかく），才麿，桃青(芭蕉)，友静，露沾（ろせん），幽山ら。才麿の序文に，〈これより先三たび句帖を顕はし，三度風体をかへて三たび古〉びたので，さらに新風を追求したのだと宣言する。作品は玉石混淆だが，談林から蕉風へ移る過渡期の俳風を余すところなく伝えている。【乾裕幸】
