Suijaku Art - Suijaku Bijutsu

Japanese: 垂迹美術 - すいじゃくびじゅつ
Suijaku Art - Suijaku Bijutsu
Art based on the idea of honji suijaku (→ honji suijaku theory), which holds that Indian Buddhas are the original form and Japanese gods are their manifestation. From the early Heian period, when the idea of honji suijaku became widespread, sculptures and paintings such as suijaku statues and suijaku mandalas were produced on a grand scale. Sculptures include the "Sogyo Hachiman Statue" (by Kaikei, Kamakura period) at Todaiji Temple, and paintings include the "Sannogu Mandala" (late Kamakura period) at Baekje Temple and the "Kumano Honjibutsu Mandala" (late Kamakura period) at Shogoin Temple. Both paintings and sculptures are heavily influenced by Buddhist art in style, but some paintings show unique styles.
