Sāgar (English spelling)

A city in the north-central part of Madhya Pradesh, central India. It is located in the Vindhya Mountains, about 150 km northeast of Bhopal. The name means "lake" in Hindi, and the city spreads out around a beautiful lake in the mountains. It has long been a strategic location on the road connecting the Ganges River basin plain with central and southern India, and there is a castle (now a police academy) from the Maratha Kingdom era. Oil pressing, flour milling, and tobacco manufacturing are thriving in the city. There is a thermal power plant, and Sagar University, founded in 1946, is located on a ridge about 700 m above sea level. It is a junction of railways and roads. Population 195,106 (1991).

インド中部，マディヤプラデーシュ州中北部の都市。ボパールの東北東約 150km，ビンディア山脈中に位置。地名はヒンディー語で「湖」を意味し，山中の美しい湖を取巻いて市街が広がっている。古くからガンジス川流域平野とインド中南部を結ぶ街道上の要地で，マラータ王国時代の城 (現警察学校) がある，搾油，製粉，たばこ製造が盛ん。火力発電所があり，約 700mの尾根に 1946年創立のサーガル大学がある。鉄道，道路の結節点。人口 19万 5106 (1991) 。
