Located in Seoul, South Korea (Republic of Korea), it is the most prestigious national university in the country. In 1946, when South Korea was liberated from Japanese rule, it was established under the US military administration by integrating Keijo Imperial University (founded in 1926), nine public technical colleges, and one private technical college. In 1970, it moved to a new campus in the suburbs of Seoul as part of a 10-year plan, and its education and research system was also revamped. At that time, the traditional College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was divided into three colleges: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences, and the College of Commerce was reorganized into a College of Management (a "college" is the equivalent of a "department" in Japan). In addition to these, the university is made up of 16 colleges, including the existing colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Law, Teacher Education, Life Science, Art, and Music. Each college has a graduate school, and there are professional schools in the fields of environment, administration, and health. In addition, there are 26 research institutes directly under the headquarters and 40 research institutes attached to each college. As of 2006, the university has approximately 1,900 faculty members and 30,000 students. [Toru Magose] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
