Gulf of Tonkin

A branch of the South China Sea bounded by the northeast coast of Vietnam, China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Leizhou Peninsula, and Hainan Island. The bay has many inlets and outlets, including Halong Bay and the Phai Tuy Long Islands on its western coast, and a large reef area at the southeastern mouth of the bay. The water in the bay is deepest in the center, reaching 50-70 meters. The seabed is generally soft, making it suitable for anchoring ships. The northeast monsoon blows from early October to March of the following year, and the southwest monsoon blows from April/May to September, but they are not very strong. However, the area is sometimes hit by typhoons. It is an important transportation route for ports such as Haiphong Port in Vietnam.

ベトナムの北東海岸と、中国の広西チワン族自治区、雷州(らいしゅう)半島および海南島に囲まれた南シナ海の支湾。湾の西岸にはハロン湾、ファイ・ツイ・ロン群島などがあって出入りに富み、湾口南東部には大暗礁地帯がある。湾内の水深は中央部がもっとも深く50～70メートルに達する。海底は一般に柔らかく、船の投錨(とうびょう)に適している。北東モンスーンが10月初旬から翌年3月まで、南西モンスーンが4～5月から9月ごろまで吹くがあまり強くはない。ただし、ときに台風に襲われることがある。ベトナムのハイフォン港などにとって重要な交通路となっている。
