A strait that separates Hokkaido from Karafuto (Sakhalin) and connects the Sea of Japan to the Sea of Okhotsk. The area is about 40 km between Soya Bay, which is surrounded by Cape Soya and Cape Noshappu at the northern tip of Hokkaido, and Cape Nishinotoro (Cape Krilion) in Sakhalin. The distance between the two capes is about 40 km. The water depth in the center is 30 to 70 m. Internationally, it is called the La Pérouse Strait after the French explorer La Pérouse. Nijō-iwa is located about 30 km from Cape Soya, but apart from this, there are no reefs or reefs that pose a danger to navigation. In summer, the Tsushima Warm Current flows in from the Sea of Japan and comes into contact with the cold waters of the Sea of Okhotsk, which makes it easy for thick fog to form, and in winter, the warm current becomes weak and drift ice can be seen. Until World War II, when Sakhalin was still Japanese territory, there were regular shipping routes between Otaru Port and Odomari Port (Korsakov), and between Wakkanai Port and Odomari Port.
