Soya Strait

A strait that separates Hokkaido from Karafuto (Sakhalin) and connects the Sea of ​​Japan to the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. The area is about 40 km between Soya Bay, which is surrounded by Cape Soya and Cape Noshappu at the northern tip of Hokkaido, and Cape Nishinotoro (Cape Krilion) in Sakhalin. The distance between the two capes is about 40 km. The water depth in the center is 30 to 70 m. Internationally, it is called the La Pérouse Strait after the French explorer La Pérouse. Nijō-iwa is located about 30 km from Cape Soya, but apart from this, there are no reefs or reefs that pose a danger to navigation. In summer, the Tsushima Warm Current flows in from the Sea of ​​Japan and comes into contact with the cold waters of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, which makes it easy for thick fog to form, and in winter, the warm current becomes weak and drift ice can be seen. Until World War II, when Sakhalin was still Japanese territory, there were regular shipping routes between Otaru Port and Odomari Port (Korsakov), and between Wakkanai Port and Odomari Port.

北海道と樺太(からふと)（サハリン）とを分離し、日本海とオホーツク海とを結ぶ海峡。北海道北端の宗谷岬と野寒布(のしゃっぷ)岬に抱かれた宗谷湾と樺太の西能登呂(にしのとろ)岬（クリリオン岬）との間の海域で、両岬間は約40キロメートル。中央部の水深は30～70メートル。国際的にはフランスの探検家ラ・ペルーズの名にちなみラ・ペルーズ海峡とよばれる。宗谷岬から約30キロメートルの位置に二丈岩があるが、これを除けば航海に危険を伴う岩礁・暗礁はない。夏季は日本海から対馬(つしま)暖流が入り、オホーツク海の低温な海水と接して濃霧が発生しやすく、冬季は暖流が微弱となって流氷がみられる。なお、樺太が日本領土であった第二次世界大戦までは、小樽(おたる)港と大泊(おおどまり)港（コルサコフ）間、稚内(わっかない)港と大泊港間には定期航路があった。
