Osako [town] - Ohasama

Japanese: 大迫[町] - おおはさま

An old town in Hienuki County in central Iwate Prefecture. The central settlement, Osako, was a former post station on the Kamaishi Kaido road. It is famous for producing tobacco leaves. The Prefectural Grape Research Station was established in 1950, and a large amount of grapes and wine are exported. Shiitake mushroom cultivation is also thriving. It is a base for climbing Mt. Hayachine in the east. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Hanamaki City along with Ishidoritani Town in Hienuki County and Towa Town in Waga County. 246.84 ^km2 . 7,006 people (2003).
