Class: Branchiopods, Order: Bivalva, Family: Bosminidae. Body length: about 0.5mm. Commonly found as plankton in lakes and ponds around the world, except Australia. Named after the forward-tilted head, the snout and long first antennae resemble an elephant. The shell of females with durable eggs is thickened near the dorsal edge to protect the eggs. A closely related species is B. coregoni , which is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Although species of the Bosminidae family have long first antennae, their length, curvature, and shell shape vary greatly not only between species, but also between individuals. For example, Bosminopsis deitersi , which is distributed from Asia to eastern Europe and North and South America, has the base half of the first antennae fused in its basic form, but sometimes they are separated, making it difficult to distinguish it from an elephant water flea.
