Auguste Choisy

1841‐1909
French civil engineer and architectural historian. He studied at the École Polytechnique and the School of Civil Engineering in Paris, and after working as an engineer, was appointed Chief Civil Engineer. He also became a professor of architecture at the School of Civil Engineering, and published many books, including Vitruvius (1910) and History of Architecture in two volumes (1899). The latter in particular is a distinctive architectural history work that examines architecture from each era in terms of materials, construction methods, structure, and form, and also considers issues such as proportion and optical illusions. It is a work that makes extensive use of explanatory axonometric drawings, and had a strong influence on pioneering 20th century architects such as A. Perret and Le Corbusier.

フランスの土木技師，建築史家。パリのエコール･ポリテクニクと土木学校に学び，技師として活躍したのち，土木技監に就任。また土木学校の建築担当教授となり，《ウィトルウィウス》(1910)，《建築史》2巻(1899)はじめ多数の著書を刊行。とくに後者は各時代の建築を，材料，工法，構造，形式の点から検討し，比例･錯視問題などにも考察を加え，説明力に富む軸測投影(アクソノメトリック)図を豊富に用いた特色ある建築史書で，A.ペレ，ル･コルビュジエなど20世紀の先駆的な建築家に強い影響を与えた。
