1841‐1909 French civil engineer and architectural historian. He studied at the École Polytechnique and the School of Civil Engineering in Paris, and after working as an engineer, was appointed Chief Civil Engineer. He also became a professor of architecture at the School of Civil Engineering, and published many books, including Vitruvius (1910) and History of Architecture in two volumes (1899). The latter in particular is a distinctive architectural history work that examines architecture from each era in terms of materials, construction methods, structure, and form, and also considers issues such as proportion and optical illusions. It is a work that makes extensive use of explanatory axonometric drawings, and had a strong influence on pioneering 20th century architects such as A. Perret and Le Corbusier.
