An opera composed by Beethoven. The libretto was translated into German by Sonnleitner from the original work by French composer Bouilly. Set in a prison near Seville, Spain, the opera depicts the beauty of marital love and resistance to unjust oppression by authority. Leonore, the wife of Florestan, who is locked in a dungeon by the prison warden Don Pizarro, disguises herself as a man and becomes a subordinate of the jailer, calling herself Fidelio. When she finds out that her husband is going to be killed, she risks her life to rescue him, and Pizarro, whose crimes are exposed, is punished, and the curtain falls on everyone's joy. The work was completed in 1805 and premiered in Vienna under Napoleon's occupation that same year, but it was subsequently revised extensively twice, and the definitive third edition was completed in 1814. As befitting a work that underwent repeated revisions, it is highly regarded as a masterpiece that adorns a page in the history of opera. It can be said that this work most clearly illustrates Beethoven's ideal of heroic deeds and deep love for humanity. It was first performed in Japan in 1943 (Showa 18) by the Fujiwara Opera Company. The overture for the first version is called "Leonore Overture No. 2", the overture for the second version is called "Leonore Overture No. 3", and there is also an "Overture in C major" which is thought to have been composed separately from the overture for the third version, and is called "Leonore Overture No. 1".
