A village in Shimoina County, southern Nagano Prefecture. Population 7,111 (1995). Located in the southern Ina Basin, on the east bank of the midstream Tenryu River, it borders Iida City to the southwest. The Kakasu River and Ogawa River originating from the Ina Mountains in the east flow west through the center and empty into the Tenryu River. Several river terraces have developed on the east bank of the Tenryu River, and have long been used for rice paddies, mulberry fields, and orchards, but in recent years, greenhouse cultivation of cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries, etc., as well as pig and cow farming have become popular. The Ajima area was once known as a producer of Japanese umbrellas. Upstream of the Ogawa River is the Yahazu Sabo Dam and Yahazu Park. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
