A village in Nishishirakawa District, in the central-southern part of Fukushima Prefecture. Population 5,014 (1995). Located in the southern part of the Nakadori region, it borders Shirakawa City to the south. Most of the village area is mountainous, and the Kumado River, a tributary of the Abukuma River, flows east from Mt. Gontakura in the west, creating flatlands in the basin. Agriculture consists of rice cultivation on the plains and livestock farming in the western foothills, but productivity is low, so the rate of part-time work is high, and in recent years there has been an increase in the number of people commuting to Shirakawa City, Yabuki Town, Saigo Village, and other areas. The Yabuki Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway is located on the eastern edge of the town. [Sato Yuji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
