A former town in Minamitakaki County in the southeastern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It occupies an alluvial fan at the northern part of the Chijiwa Fault Escarpment at the base of the Shimabara Peninsula, separating the Ariake Sea from Chijiwa Bay (Tachibana Bay). The town produces rice and potatoes, and also cultivates strawberries and melons. Aino, in the center, is a key transportation point into the Shimabara Peninsula. The Aino Observatory in the south offers scenic views of Mount Unzen and Chijiwa Bay. In October 2005, it merged with Kunimi Town, Mizuho Town, Agatsuma Town, Chijiwa Town, Obama Town, and Minamikushiyama Town in Nishitakaki County to become Unzen City. 11.72 km2 . 4,800 people (2003).
