A region in northwest Italy. Its capital is Turin. It is surrounded by the Alps to the north and west, and the Apennines to the south, with the plains of the Po River basin to the east. There are ancient mountain passes in the Alps, and historically this region has had close ties with France and inland Europe. It is a developed region with a high income level, but agriculture is diverse, ranging from small-scale wheat and livestock farming in the depopulated mountainous areas to large-scale rice farming, fruit trees, and vegetable cultivation in the plains of the Po River basin. In the 19th century, the textile industry was established in the northern hills, backed by abundant hydroelectric power. Machinery, metals, and automobile industries and related sectors account for about half of the region's industrial production, and are concentrated in the Province of Turin. In recent years, advanced technology industries such as aircraft and electronics have also developed. Ivrea and Turin had already been colonized in Roman times, but they were ruled by the Franks, and in the 11th century the House of Savoy, which ruled the current Savoy region of France, advanced into the region, gradually expanding their domain. From the 16th century onwards, the family made Turin their capital, and in 1718 they acquired Sardinia, forming the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the second half of the 19th century, under Prime Minister Cavour, modernisation was undertaken, and the Italian Unification (Risorgimento) movement was promoted, resulting in the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy. At the time of unification, the Savoy region, the birthplace of the royal family, was ceded to France. Area: 25,399 km2 , population: 4,363,916 (2011).
