A psychoanalytic term that describes conflict between brothers. It is based on the story in the Old Testament of Cain, the son of Adam and Eve, who killed his brother Abel, who was favored by God. It refers to a series of emotions such as parental favoritism, and envy and jealousy towards one's younger brother. Usually, these emotions are pushed into the unconscious so that they are not consciously felt and cause pain, but they can sometimes unconsciously appear in one's words and actions.
