Plutarch's major work. It is a comparative biography of 50 great Greek and Roman figures, two of each. The original title, Bioi Paraleoi, means "Parallel Lives." Rather than being faithful to historical facts as a biography, it focuses on anecdotes that highlight the character of each person. The descriptions are somewhat disorganized, and the writing is not virtuoso, but the numerous portrayals of human beings and the endless lessons it teaches have had a great influence on later generations. Shakespeare used the English translation of this work to write his plays, such as "Julius Caesar."

プルタルコスの主著。ギリシアとローマの偉人たち50人の伝記を，それぞれ２人ずつ対比して並べたもの。原題ビオイ・パラレオイは〈対比列伝〉の意。伝記として史実に忠実ならんとするよりは，それぞれの人物の性格を浮彫にする挿話に力が注がれている。記述はやや雑然としており，文章も名文ではないが，幾多の人間像と，くめども尽きぬ教訓により，後世に与えた影響は大きい。シェークスピアはこの作品の英訳を利用し，《ジュリアス・シーザー》等の戯曲を書いている。
