Yamauchi Yodo

Japanese: 山内容堂 - やまうちようどう

Lord of Tosa domain in the late Edo period. His given name was Toyonobu. Yodo was his pen name, and he also had other titles such as Geikai Suiko. He became lord of the domain at the age of 20, and appointed Yoshida Toyo and others to carry out reforms in the domain's government. During the issue of the succession to the shogunate in 1857-1858, he worked hard with Matsudaira Yoshinaga and Shimazu Nariakira to support Hitotsubashi Yoshinobu. He retired amid the oppression of the Ansei Purge, but resumed his activities in 1862, aiming to realize a union of powerful domains by uniting the Imperial Court and the Shogunate. In 1867, following a proposal by Goto Shojiro, he submitted a petition to Tokugawa Yoshinobu for the return of imperial rule to the Emperor. He served as a councilor in the Meiji government.

幕末の土佐藩主。名は豊信(とよしげ)。容堂は号で，ほかに鯨海酔侯(げいかいすいこう)などの別号をもつ。20歳で藩主となり吉田東洋らを起用して藩政改革を行なった。1857年―1858年将軍継嗣問題の際，松平慶永，島津斉彬らとともに一橋慶喜擁立に尽力。安政の大獄の強圧のなかで隠退したが，1862年に活動を再開，公武合体による雄藩連合実現を目指した。1867年後藤象二郎の建議をいれて大政奉還を徳川慶喜に建白。維新政府では議定などに就く。
