Isahaya City is located in the southern part of Nagasaki Prefecture, at the base of both the Nagasaki and Shimabara peninsulas. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. The Isahaya Plain, including reclaimed land, spreads across the area, forming an agricultural region that produces a lot of rice, potatoes, onions, carrots, and mandarin oranges, and also has a thriving livestock industry. Nori seaweed farming is also practiced. The city center on the Honmyo River delta developed as a castle town for the Isahaya clan. It is a transportation hub where the Nagasaki Main Line and Nagasaki Expressway pass through, and where the Omura Line and Shimabara Railway branch off. In recent years, industrial shipments have grown rapidly, with the creation of a core industrial complex in the hills to the west and the establishment of cutting-edge technology companies. Housing development is also underway, including Nishi-Isahaya New Town. It is the base for tourism in Unzen. It is home to Isahaya Park, famous for its azaleas, Meganebashi Bridge, the Comprehensive Agricultural and Forestry Research Station, and the Agricultural Management College. As part of the Isahaya Bay reclamation project, in April 1997 the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries carried out construction to completely close off the inner part of Isahaya Bay with a seaweed-retaining dike (total length approximately 7 km), causing damage to the seaweed farming industry and other industries. In March 2005, the towns of Tarami in Nishisonogi County, Moriyama, Imori, Takaki and Konagai in Kitatakaki County were incorporated into the area. Area: 341.79 ^km2 . Population: 140,752 (2010).

長崎県南部，長崎・島原両半島の基部にある市。1940年市制。干拓地を含む諫早平野が広がり，米，ジャガイモ，タマネギ，ニンジン，ミカンを多産，畜産も盛んな農業地域を形成。ノリ養殖も行われる。本明川デルタ上の中心市街は諫早氏の城下町として発達。長崎本線，長崎自動車道が通じ，大村線，島原鉄道が分岐する交通要地。西部の丘陵地に中核工業団地が造成され先端技術企業が進出するなど，近年は工業出荷額が急速に伸展。西諫早ニュータウンなど住宅開発も進む。雲仙観光の基地。ツツジで有名な諫早公園，眼鏡橋，総合農林試験場，農業経営大学校がある。諫早湾干拓事業で，1997年４月農水省が諫早湾奥部を潮受け堤防（全長約７km）で完全に締め切る工事が実施され，ノリ養殖業などに被害が出ている。2005年３月西彼杵郡多良見町，北高来郡森山町，飯盛町，高来町，小長井町を編入。341.79km²。14万752人（2010）。
