An evergreen shrub of the Ardisiaceae family. It grows in mountain forests in warm regions west of the Kanto region, and is distributed south to Taiwan, China, and Indochina. It grows to about 1m in height, has hairless branches, dark green, slightly glossy leaves, and alternate leaves. The leaves are oblong, 5-17cm long, 2-5cm wide, and have sparse sawtooth edges. In April and May, small flowers bloom in clusters in the leaf axils. Dioecious. The corolla is yellowish-white, bell-shaped, about 5mm long, and has five shallow lobes at the tip. In male flowers, five stamens are attached to the upper part of the inner wall of the corolla. The fleshy fruit is globular, milky white, and contains many seeds.
