On July 25, 1957, heavy rain with daily precipitation exceeding 1000mm occurred from Isahaya to the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture, and was named the Isahaya Heavy Rain. In Nishigo, Mizuho-cho, Minamitakaki-gun, the daily precipitation on the 25th reached 1109.2mm (a Japanese record), with a maximum hourly precipitation of 144mm. 856 people were killed and 136 were missing. This was caused by a small low pressure system passing over the rainy season front, which caused warm, moist air from the southwest to slip under the cold air above, resulting in heavy rain.
