Italy waged two wars of aggression against Ethiopia since the end of the 19th century. In the 1880s, Italy advanced along the Red Sea coast from Assab to Massawa, and in January 1890, took control of the region as the colony of Eritrea. Meanwhile, in 1889, taking advantage of the struggle for the Ethiopian throne, Italy concluded a treaty of friendship and commerce (Uchali Agreement) with King Shoa (later Emperor of Ethiopia) Menelik, aiming to make Ethiopia a protectorate. In 1893, Menelik annulled the agreement and tried to eliminate Italian interference, but Italy continued its military invasion of Ethiopia, using the Eritrean colony as a base.

19世紀末以降，イタリアが2度にわたってエチオピアに対して行った侵略戦争。イタリアは1880年代にエチオピアのアッサブからマッサワに至る紅海沿岸に進出し，90年1月この地域をエリトリア植民地として支配下においた。一方1889年エチオピア皇帝位継承争いに乗じてショア王(のちエチオピア皇帝)メネリクと友好通商協定(ウッチャリ協定)を結び，エチオピアの保護領化を狙った。93年メネリクは協定を破棄してイタリアの干渉を排除しようとしたが，イタリアはエリトリア植民地を拠点としてエチオピアへの軍事侵略を続けた。
