A passerine bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration). Total length 15 cm. It is smaller than a sparrow but has a long tail. Sexes are heterochromatic. The male is pink overall, with a silvery white tinge of pink on the head and cheeks, and a brown vertical stripe on the back. There are two white bands on the wings, and the outer tail feathers are also white. Females are yellowish brown instead of pink. It is distributed throughout eastern Asia, breeding in southeastern Siberia, northern China, Primorsky Krai, and Sakhalin. In Japan, it breeds in Hokkaido and the Shimokita Peninsula, and migrates as a winter bird to Honshu and south. It lives in areas with thick shrubs and bamboo grass such as forest edges, sparse forests, and swamp forests, and can also be seen in garden trees and hedges of houses near forests. スズメ目アトリ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長15cm。スズメより体は小さいが尾は長い。雌雄異色。雄は全体にばら色で,頭上とほおはばら色を帯びた銀白色,背に褐色の縦斑がある。翼に白帯が2条あり,外側の尾羽も白い。雌はばら色の代りに黄褐色。アジア東部に分布し,シベリア南東部,中国北部,沿海州,サハリンなどで繁殖する。日本では北海道と下北半島で繁殖し,本州以南に冬鳥として渡来する。林縁,疎林,湿地林などの低木やササの茂るところにすみ,林に近い人家の庭木や生垣にも現れる。
