A passerine bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration). Total length 15 cm. It is smaller than a sparrow but has a long tail. Sexes are heterochromatic. The male is pink overall, with a silvery white tinge of pink on the head and cheeks, and a brown vertical stripe on the back. There are two white bands on the wings, and the outer tail feathers are also white. Females are yellowish brown instead of pink. It is distributed throughout eastern Asia, breeding in southeastern Siberia, northern China, Primorsky Krai, and Sakhalin. In Japan, it breeds in Hokkaido and the Shimokita Peninsula, and migrates as a winter bird to Honshu and south. It lives in areas with thick shrubs and bamboo grass such as forest edges, sparse forests, and swamp forests, and can also be seen in garden trees and hedges of houses near forests.
