…It is distinct from track races held at stadiums, road marathons, and relay races. It is said to have developed from the British children's game of "paper-chase," in which several children, acting as rabbits, run away while scattering pieces of paper, and many other children, acting as hounds, chase them. The first cross-country race was organized in 1867, when the Thames Boat Club in London adopted it as a winter training for the legs and hips. The first British championship was held in 1877, and the first championship in the United States was held in 1890.
