A port city in the northwest of Norfolk, eastern England, United Kingdom. Its ancient name was Lynn, derived from the Brythonic word lindo (meaning lake). Population: 33,300 (1981). Located about 5 km upstream from the mouth of the Great Ouse, it was once a major port in eastern England as a trading port at the head of the Wash. The town's origins date back to Saxon times, but the grid-shaped town center was built during the Norman Conquest. It was granted self-governing status by King John in 1204, and given the name King's Lynn by Henry VIII in 1537. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
