Isaac - yitschāq (Hebrew)

Isaac - yitschāq (Hebrew)

One of the patriarchs of Israel. According to the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament, he is the son of Abraham and the father of Esau and Jacob. In particular, "The Offering of Isaac" (Chapter 22), "The Selection of a Bride" (Chapter 24), "The Sojourn in Gerar" (Chapter 26), and "The Blessing of Jacob" (Chapter 27) well tell the story of Isaac's life and faith. His name "Isaac" means "laughter" and comes from the various laughs that occurred before and after his birth. His parents hear God's promise that they will have a child and smile bitterly at their advanced age (Chapter 17, verse 17; Chapter 18, verse 12). His mother Sarah gives birth to Isaac and laughs with joy, but at the same time she is concerned about the public's ridicule of her advanced age at giving birth (Chapter 21, verse 6). Incidentally, Kierkegaard reflects on the issues of faith surrounding the offering of Isaac in his book Fear and Trembling.
