The official name is Saint-Étienne-sur-Loire. It is an industrial city in the southeast of France, the capital of the Loire department. The city's name comes from the name of the cathedral in the center. Weapon manufacturing and silk weaving were already established in the 15th century, but in the 19th century coal mining flourished and the city rapidly developed as an industrial city, forming the basis for the development of heavy industry in France. The earliest railway in France was laid in 1828, 16 km long, between Andrézieux on the banks of the Loire. Today, the mines have declined, but the city is a major center of the textile and dyeing industries. Metal industry, centered on the production of alloy steel, is also thriving, and there are many factories, including a large national weapons factory, that produce weapons. In 1966, the Lyon-Saint-Étienne Metropolitan Development Research Organization was established, and comprehensive development of the two cities, which now share a metropolitan area, is underway. Population: 172,696 (2008).
