1892‐1972 French scholar. An authority on comparative studies of ancient Indian law that was passed down in Southeast Asia. Born in the Ardennes in northern France. After graduating from the École des Sciences Orientales in Paris in 1919, he traveled to Thailand as a legal consultant in 1924 and devoted himself to the study of the Three Seals Code, a traditional Thai law. In 1932, he obtained his doctorate in law for his study of private slaves in ancient Siamese law. His lectures on the history of Thai law (1935-39) at Thammasat University in Thailand were later published and are still highly regarded today. In 1938-39, he published an edited edition of the Three Seals Code and presented numerous essays on the code, laying the foundation for the study of traditional Thai law.
