Robert Lingat

French scholar. An authority on comparative studies of ancient Indian law that was passed down in Southeast Asia. Born in the Ardennes in northern France. After graduating from the École des Sciences Orientales in Paris in 1919, he traveled to Thailand as a legal consultant in 1924 and devoted himself to the study of the Three Seals Code, a traditional Thai law. In 1932, he obtained his doctorate in law for his study of private slaves in ancient Siamese law. His lectures on the history of Thai law (1935-39) at Thammasat University in Thailand were later published and are still highly regarded today. In 1938-39, he published an edited edition of the Three Seals Code and presented numerous essays on the code, laying the foundation for the study of traditional Thai law.

フランスの学者。東南アジアに継受されたインド古代法比較研究の権威。北フランスのアルデンヌ県生れ。1919年パリ東洋語学校卒業後，24年法律顧問としてタイに渡り，タイの伝統法である《三印法典》の研究に没頭，32年《シャム古代法における私奴隷の研究》で法学博士号を取得した。タイのタマサート大学における〈タイ法制史〉(1935‐39)の講義はのちに出版され，今日もなお高い評価を受けている。38‐39年《三印法典》の校訂本を出版するとともに，同法典に関する数々の論考を発表してタイ伝統法研究の基礎を築いた。
