A marine fish of the family Perciformes, family Pontedera (illustration). Also known as Isagi. Found in areas south of central Honshu, the East China Sea, and Taiwan, but mostly in areas with strong warm current influence. Known by various local names, such as Issaki in Kyushu and Okuseigo in Tohoku. Juveniles have three distinct dark brown vertical stripes on their sides, but when they reach a body length of 20 cm, these gradually become indistinct and disappear. They reach a total length of 40 cm. Juveniles form large schools in coastal reef areas, but as they grow, they live in the crevices of rocks offshore.
