Poelzig (English spelling) Hans Poelzig

German architect. Born and died in Berlin. Studied at the Technical University of Berlin. Taught at the architecture department of the Breslau School of Applied Arts from 1900 to 1916, later becoming its principal. He served as Dresden's civil engineering inspector from 1916 to 1920, chairman of the Deutsche Werkbund from 1919 to 1921, and professor at the Technical University of Berlin from 1924 to 1935. He brought a breath of fresh air to modern German urban architecture with simple, powerful mass structures such as the water tower in Posen (1911) and the trading house in Breslau (Wrocław) (1911-12), and later showed enthusiasm for expressionist styles. His industrial and theatrical architecture is particularly noteworthy. Other works include the Grosse Theater in Berlin (1918-19), the administration building of the IG dyeing company in Frankfurt (1928-30), and the Berlin Radio Station (1929-30).

ドイツの建築家。ベルリンに生まれ、同地で没。ベルリン工科大学に学ぶ。1900～16年ブレスラウ工芸学校建築科で教え、のち同校の校長となる。16～20年ドレスデン市土木監督官、19～21年ドイツ工作連盟議長、24～35年ベルリン工科大学教授を務めた。ポーゼンの給水塔（1911）、ブレスラウ（ブロツワフ）の商館（1911～12）などの単純で力強い量塊構造でドイツ近代都市建築に新風をおこし、のち表現主義的な様式に意欲を示した。とくに工業および演劇のための建築が注目される。そのほかの作品にベルリンの大劇場（1918～19）、フランクフルトのIG染色会社管理棟（1928～30）、ベルリン放送局（1929～30）がある。
