…China's first treatise, the Erya, which was probably created during the Han dynasty, was divided into 19 categories, including Parent, Palace, Vessel, Music, Heaven, and Earth. In 1674, the Frenchman Louis Moreri (1643-80) arranged the entries in alphabetical order in his Grand Historical Dictionary, Le grand dictionnaire historique, and this method became widespread. In Japan, the words dictionary and vocabulary have been used for a long time, but when Heibonsha published the Encyclopedia in 1931, Shimonaka Yasaburo coined the term "Dictionary," and it has since come into widespread use. …
