A conductor from the former Yugoslavia. Born in Croatia. After joining the Vienna Boys' Choir, he studied at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. He made his debut in Germany in 1919, but returned to his homeland in 1938 and became a leading conductor in Germany. After World War II, he made a name for himself by guest conductors at opera houses in Vienna, Munich, Milan, and other places, and became general music director of the Dresden State Opera from 1956 to 1958 and the Frankfurt Opera from 1961 to 1966. He then served as music director of the Zagreb Philharmonic and the Monte Carlo State Opera, but after 1978 he became a freelancer due to poor health, and passed away in Zagreb. In 1965 (Showa 40), he first came to Japan with the Slavic Opera Company and performed with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and after that he frequently visited Japan to guest conductor the NHK Symphony Orchestra, becoming the orchestra's honorary conductor. With his profound and persuasive style, he showed his true worth in Beethoven, Wagner, and Bruckner.
