A general term for sports that have been newly invented and arranged with the aim of being easy and enjoyable for anyone, unlike modern sports such as soccer and basketball, which require a certain amount of practice and have a strong competitive principle. A uniquely Japanese expression, it means "new sports" that replace modern sports. The emergence of new sports as an antithesis to such modern sports is in line with the movement to promote lifelong sports. This trend is also a global one that has become evident since the 1970s.
