Recently, aquaculture has been practiced, whereby eggs are fertilized, and young sea urchins are artificially raised on land until they reach a diameter of about 1 cm, and then released into the sea. In local areas, Ezo-bafun sea urchins are often called Gaze or Bouzu-gaze, Kitamurasaki sea urchins are called Nona, Murasaki sea urchins are called Kurogaze, and Aka sea urchins are called Onigaze in local dialects. The words "kase" and "gaze", which remain in local names, are old names for sea urchins, and in the past they were written as "rei-ga-shi", "ko-tsuke-ga-shi" and "ko-tsuke-ga-shi".
