Ekman transport

This refers to the net water transport caused by Ekman wind-driven currents. In the northern (southern) hemisphere, water is transported 90 degrees to the right (left) of the wind direction, and its magnitude is given by τ/f, where τ is the wind stress acting on the water surface and f is the Coriolis factor. The convergence and divergence of Ekman transport gives the distribution of vertical currents on the ocean surface, and wind-driven currents are usually calculated using this as a boundary condition. エクマンの吹送流によって生じる正味の水の輸送をいう。水は、北（南）半球では風向に対して90度右向き（左向き）に運ばれ、その大きさは、τを水面に働く風の応力、fをコリオリの因数として、τ/fであたえられる。エクマン輸送の収束・発散が、海洋上面での鉛直流の分布を与え、これを境界条件として、風成海流を計算するのが普通である。（永田）
