An urban area located on the left bank of the Ono River estuary, in the northeast of Oita City, in the central-eastern part of Oita Prefecture. Former city name. Established as a city in 1949, and merged with Oita City in 1963. During the Edo period, it prospered as the political center and port town of an exclave of the Kumamoto Domain. In 1939, chemical factories related to dyes and pharmaceuticals were established here, and after World War II, pulp and paper factories moved in. Since 1964, it has been designated a new industrial city, and steel and petrochemical complexes have been constructed on vast reclaimed land, forming the industrial core of Oita City. As urbanization progressed, air pollution became a problem. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
