Internal medicine scientist. An authority on beriberi. Born in Wakayama Prefecture as the second son of Sudo Noboru, he was adopted into the Shimazono family. In 1904 (Meiji 37), he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University, where he majored in internal medicine under Miura Kinnosuke. From 1911 to 1913, he studied neuropathology in Germany. After returning to Japan, he was appointed professor at Okayama Medical College, and after serving as professor at Kyoto Imperial University, he transferred to the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University in 1924 (Taisho 13), where he presided over the Shimazono Department of Internal Medicine and also served as director of the affiliated hospital. In 1929 (Showa 4), he lectured at the University of Berlin as a professor on a Japan-Germany exchange program. He continued his research on beriberi and neurology, and in particular conducted extensive research on the etiology, pathology, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of beriberi.
