There are also surviving shorthand versions of popular storytelling from the Meiji period, such as "Sasano Gonza's Revenge," "Sasano Gonzaburo's Later Story," and "Sasano Gonzaburo's Honorable Spear." The story is about Sasano Gonzaburo, a master of the Hozoin school of spearmanship and a retainer of the Kishu clan, who, together with his sister-in-law Oume, endures many hardships and finally avenges the death of his stepfather (foster parent). The final scene of revenge is set in a spectacular setting, with such heroes as Takada Matabei, his master of spearmanship, Sekiguchi Hachiro, the judo master, Miyamoto Musashi, and Mukai Kurando, the horseman, rushing to his aid.

明治期に流行した講談で《笹野権三（ごんざ）仇討》《笹野権三郎（ごんざぶろう）後日譚》《笹野権三名誉の鎗》などの名の速記本も残っている。槍術（そうじゆつ）宝蔵院流の名手で紀州家の臣，笹野権三郎が義妹お梅とともに艱難（かんなん）の末，義父(育て親)の仇を討つという話。この最後の仇討の場は，槍術の師である高田又兵衛，柔術の関口八郎，剣術の宮本武蔵，馬術の向井蔵人（くらんど）といった一代の勇士らが助勢等にかけつけるという豪華なしかけになっている。
