Lower School Collection - Science Collection

Japanese:
Lower School Collection - Science Collection

A Japanese dictionary. 2 volumes. Written by Toroku Hanou (a monk from the foot of Mt. Higashiyama, real name unknown). It is said to have been completed in 1444 (Bun'an 1). It classifies about 3,000 words, mainly Chinese characters and words used in daily life, into 18 categories, from heaven and earth to words and double letters. It seems to have been widely used during the Muromachi period, and there are more than 30 old manuscripts that exist from before the Keicho period (1596-1615). The oldest printed version was published in 1617 (Genwa 3). However, since the later "Setsuyoshu" was arranged in Iroha order and was easy to search, it was not widely published during the Edo period. The title comes from "Gegaku Jijo Tatsu" in the "Xianwen" chapter of the "Analects of Confucius."
