Latent infection - Senpukukansen (English spelling)

Japanese: 潜伏感染 - せんぷくかんせん（英語表記）latent infection

Regardless of whether the infection is overt or inapparent, a state in which an equilibrium is maintained between the pathogen and the host organism for a long period of time after the organism is infected with a pathogen is called a latent infection. In some cases, the pathogen continues to be latent in the host organism and does not show any clinical symptoms throughout the organism's life, but when the host organism's resistance weakens, the pathogen often recurs and shows clinical symptoms. Examples of such diseases include herpes simplex infection, chickenpox and shingles, cytomegalovirus infection, syphilis, and tuberculosis.

顕性感染，不顕性感染を問わず，生体に病原微生物の感染が成立した後，長期間にわたって病原体と宿主生体との間に平衡関係が保たれている状態を潜伏感染という。宿主生体のなかで，病原体が潜伏感染を続けて，終生臨床症状をあらわすことなく過ごすこともあるが，宿主生体の抵抗力が低下した際，再発して臨床症状を認めることも少なくない。このような例として，単純ヘルペス感染症，水痘と帯状疱疹，サイトメガロウイルス感染症，梅毒，結核などがあげられる。
