Whirlwind Leaf - Whirlwind Leaf

Japanese:
Whirlwind Leaf - Whirlwind Leaf

A binding method for Japanese and Chinese old books. A variation of orihon. The spines of the front and back covers of a folded book are joined with paper or rags and the main text is wrapped around it. There are also some where the front and back are wrapped in a single piece of paper. The main text remains folded, so when opened it becomes one continuous piece, and it is said to have been named whirlwind leaf because the paper flutters when the wind blows. This binding method has been around since the Northern Song period in China. There is also a theory that to prevent the main text from spreading out, the spine is glued together and the front and back are wrapped in a single piece of paper, or separate covers are added to the front and back. Either way, this binding method can be considered a transitional step from the orihon form to the booklet form.
