In the Edo period, a pass was necessary for women to pass through a checkpoint. It was also called a woman's stamp. At the checkpoint, women were closely guarded, along with weapons, as in the saying "guns in, women out," and a special pass with detailed regulations was issued for that purpose. Its origins date back to around 1616. (→ Orai Tegata, Kasho) Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
