[Died] October 2, 1985. Beverly Hills, California. American actor. Born Roy Harold Scherer, Jr., later Roy Fitzgerald. Known as a handsome actor, he was active in movies in the 1950s and 1960s, and mainly on television since the 1970s. He served in the Navy during World War II, and moved to Hollywood in 1946 to pursue a career as an actor. In 1947, he caught the eye of a talent scout and was given the stage name Rock Hudson, after the Rock of Gibraltar and the Hudson River. He signed with Warner Brothers and made his film debut in Fighter Squadron (1948). A year later, he moved to Universal. His leading role in Magnificent Obsession (1954) established him as a star. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as an old-fashioned rancher in Giant (1956). By the end of the 1950s, he was one of Hollywood's biggest earners. He also showed his talent for comedy in films such as Send Me No Flowers (1964), in which he starred alongside Doris Day. Shortly before his death at age 59 from complications caused by AIDS, he came out as gay. He made a major contribution to raising awareness of the horrors of AIDS.

Died April 13, 1960. American legal scholar, professor at the University of Missouri and Harvard. He strongly advocated for America's membership in the League of Nations but failed to achieve his goal. In 1919 he joined the League's Secretariat and participated as a legal adviser in various international conferences. He devoted his energies to the study of international litigation, and served as a judge of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 1933, and as a judge of the Permanent Court of International Justice for ten years from 1936. His main works include Progress in International Organization (1932), The Permanent Court of International Justice (34), and International Tribunals, Past and Future (44).

British navigator and explorer. He made four voyages in search of a route to China via the Arctic Ocean. His first voyage was made in 1607 for the Russian Company, and he discovered Jan Mayen Island. In 1608, at the request of the same company, he explored a route to China between Spitsbergen and Novaya Zemlya. In 1609, at the request of the Dutch East India Company, he set out on his third voyage, passing through Hudson Bay, which is named after him, and arriving at New Amsterdam, and then up the Hudson River, reaching near Albany. In 1610, he set out from London for his fourth voyage. He passed through Hudson Strait in mid-June and reached Hudson Bay in August. Food shortages caused discord among the members of his expedition, and he was forced to board a boat with his son and seven companions, where he drifted and was never heard from again.

His representative works include The naturalist in La Plata (1892), Green Mansions (1904), his autobiography Far Away and Long Ago (18), Afoot in England (09), which depicts the English countryside, and a study of birds.

イギリスの航海者,探検家。北極海経由の中国航路を求めて4回の航海を行う。第1回目は 1607年ロシア会社のためになされ,ヤンマイエン島を見出す。 08年同会社の要請でスピッツベルゲンとノバヤゼムリヤ間の中国航路を探索。 09年オランダ東インド会社の依頼で第3回目の航海に出発,彼の名にちなんだハドソン湾を経て,ニューアムステルダムにいたり,さらにハドソン川をさかのぼりオールバニ近くに達した。 10年第4回目の航海のためロンドンを出発。6月中頃ハドソン海峡を通り,8月ハドソン湾に達した。食糧不足から隊員間に不和を生じ,息子および仲間7名とともにボートに強制移乗させられ,漂流,消息不明となった。
