The origins of the Ise Naga clan, the founder of the Sengoku period daimyo who wielded widespread influence throughout the Kanto region, are unclear. They were guests of the Imagawa clan of Suruga, but in the late 15th century they advanced from Nirayama in Izu to Sagami, and based themselves in Odawara, and Naga clan's son Ujitsuna took the name Hojo. Grandson Ujiyasu expanded his sphere of influence, conquering the southern half of Kanto, and became a leading Sengoku daimyo who competed with Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen for supremacy. For five generations, until their downfall in 1590 during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Odawara Expedition, they skillfully governed their territories and prospered. To distinguish them from the regent Hojo clan of the Kamakura period, they are commonly known as the Later Hojo clan.
