Gyeonggama
[Noun] A tea kettle made in Kyoto. They began to be cast at a kettle workshop established in Sanjo towards the end of the Muromachi period. They have an elegant pattern with a plain, smooth surface that is made to a set standard, and are made using the techniques of firing and haochi . They began with Nishimura Michihito, Nagoshi Zensho, and Tsuji Yojiro. They were made according to the tastes, orders, and copies of tea masters, and other individual makers appeared, and later families of kettle makers such as Onishi, Nagoshi, and Nishimura flourished. *Chawa (1804), Vol. 1 "During the time of Rikyu, there was a man named Yojiro who lived in Kyoto and was a master kettle maker. He has no descendants who inherited the name today. These are called Kyoto kettles. It is said that Rikyu was fond of many of them and had them cast to his liking."

〘名〙 京都産の茶湯釜。室町末期、三条にできた釜座で鋳造され始めた。一定の規格に合わせた無文の滑肌の優美な作柄で、焼抜き、羽落(はおち)の技法が行なわれた。西村道仁、名越善正、辻与次郎に始まる。茶人の好み、注文、写しによって作られ、その他の個人の制作者が出現し、後には大西、名越、西村など釜師の家系が栄えた。※茶話(1804)上「利休時代に、京師に住居せる与二郎なるもの釜の名人なり。子孫今は相続せず。これを京釜といふ。利休の気に入りて好み鋳させしが多しとなん」
