…According to the Wamyōshō, there was a Shirakawa district, consisting of 17 townships, where the Shirakawa Army was established in 728 (Jinki 5). After Minamoto no Yoritomo's conquest of Oshu, the Yuki clan took possession of the area, and in 1289 (Shōō 2) built Karame Castle and proclaimed themselves the Shirakawa clan. In 1627 (Kan'ei 4), Niwa Nagashige entered the area with a stipend of 100,700 koku, and carried out extensive renovations of Shirakawa-Komine Castle, giving it a grand appearance in the early modern period, and establishing a large gate on the south side of the castle.
