The automation of ship operation. Since the invention and practical application of autopilots in the early 1920s, there was nothing to see for a while. However, after World War II, automation using electronic technology rapidly progressed in all industries, and Japanese shipbuilding and shipping companies began researching and developing automated ships around 1960, successfully automating ship steering, engine control, mooring, and loading and unloading, reducing transportation costs, improving safety, and improving working conditions. Especially from the latter half of the 1960s, efforts were made to develop ultra-automation, aiming for unmanned operation and automation in many areas through the installation of electronic computers on ships and a highly centralized control system. In September 1970, Sanko Kisen's Seiko Maru, known as an automated ship (machine space zero people) that largely incorporated these results, was launched, and in February 1971, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' Mifuneyama Maru, was launched. The results attracted worldwide attention.

船舶操縦の自動化のこと。 1920年代の初めに自動操縦装置が考案され，実用化されて以来，しばらくはみるべきものがなかった。しかし第2次世界大戦後は，すべての産業に電子技術を応用した自動化が急速に進み，日本の造船海運関係者も 60年頃から自動化船の研究開発に取組み，操船，機関制御，係船，荷役作業などの自動化に成功，輸送コストの低減，安全性の向上，労働条件の改善をはかってきた。特に 60年代の後半からは，電子計算機を船に積込み，高度集中制御方式によって多方面にわたる無人化，自動化を目指す超自動化の開発に努めるようになり，70年9月には，これらの成果を大幅に取入れた自動化船 (MO船。 machinery space zero people) といわれる三光汽船の『星光丸』，71年2月には大阪商船三井船舶の『三峰山丸』が就航，その成果は世界の注目を浴びた。
