A city in the southeast of Brazil, in the western part of the state of São Paulo. It is located in a plateau about 370 km west-northwest of the state capital, São Paulo, at an altitude of about 650 m. It was settled by pioneer farmers in the 1920s. It is currently the commercial and industrial center of an agricultural and livestock region, distributing rice, coffee, cotton, livestock, and timber, and is engaged in food processing, as well as the manufacture of alcoholic beverages, chemical products, and pharmaceuticals, and the mining of non-ferrous metals. It is connected to São Paulo by rail and road via Bauru. Population: 151,760 (1991 estimate).
