Rivera, J.

In October 1960, a popular coup d'état, influenced by the Cuban Revolution, overthrew the Lemus government and put the Governing Council in power, but in January 1961 it too was overthrown by a military coup. In the April 1962 presidential election, Jorge Rivera was elected president, but the opposition parties boycotted the election. The Rivera government adopted a development policy, promoting import-substitution industrialization in El Salvador, and in 1964 helped found the Central American Defense Council.
